Biological Learning and Control: Shadmehr and Mussa-ivaldi 1. Space in the Mammalian Brain

چکیده
1.1 Where am I? You wake up one morning in a hotel room. You have just arrived in Cozumel, Mexico for a short vacation. But right now, coming out of a dream, you do not quite remember this fact. The room is dark, there is only a dim light coming from the shutter on the right side somewhere at a distance. You do not know where you are. Or why you are there. It cannot be your home. Or is it? The bathroom would be right on the left of the door. But where is the door? This is a transient disorientation that many have occasionally experienced. Puzzling and disturbing. But it does not last long. Our normal mode of being includes a persistent awareness of where we are in space and this awareness seems to be tightly connected with our ability to remember facts. For example, to remember that we are on vacation in Cozumel.

متن کاملMotor learning of novel dynamics is not represented in a single global coordinate system: evaluation of mixed coordinate representations and local learning
Successful motor performance requires the ability to adapt motor commands to task dynamics. A central question in movement neuroscience is how these dynamics are represented. Although it is widely assumed that dynamics (e.g., force fields) are represented in intrinsic, joint-based coordinates (Shadmehr R, Mussa-Ivaldi FA. J Neurosci 14: 3208-3224, 1994), recent evidence has questioned this prop...
متن کاملComputational Elements of the Adaptive Controller of the Human Arm
We consider the problem of how the CNS learns to control dynamics of a mechanical system. By using a paradigm where a subject's hand interacts with a virtual mechanical environment, we show that learning control is via composition of a model of the imposed dynamics. Some properties of the computational elements with which the CNS composes this model are inferred through the generalization capab...
متن کاملInterference in Learning Internal Models of Inverse Dynamics in Humans
Experiments were performed to reveal some of the computational properties of the human motor memory system. We show that as humans practice reaching movements while interacting with a novel mechanical environment, they learn an internal model of the inverse dynamics of that environment. Subjects show recall of this model at testing sessions 24 hours after the initial practice. The representatio...
متن کاملModular features of motor control and learning.
The study of complex motor behaviours has highlighted the role of modular representations both in the planning and in the execution of actions. Recent findings suggest the presence of functional modules within a variety of neural structures. Computational investigations are now addressing the issue of how these modules may act concurrently to generate a wide repertoire of behaviours.
